massage noun (Concise Encyclopedia)

Systematic, scientific manipulation of body tissues with the hands to relieve pain and reduce swelling, relax muscles, and speed healing after strains and sprains. It has been used for more than 3,000 years by the Chinese as a system for joint and muscle ailments, which was later extended to relieve deformities of arthritis and re-educate muscles following paralysis. Manipulations include light or hard stroking, compression (kneading, squeezing, and friction), and percussion (striking with the edges of the hands in rapid alternation).

The massage focus is on correcting muscle imbalance and strain through gate and ergonomic analysis. Together we can shave those last few seconds off your endurance event, complete your activities of daily living with less pain and stiffness and help you to be in the best shape of your life. Swedish and Deep Tissue massage will be utilized in conjunction with stretching exercises and postural correction.

First Session: Thorough intake and identification of goals including gate and ergonomic analysis. Focused massage and stretching exercises.

Subsequent Sessions: Brief intake focusing on changes and any acute or new presentations of imbalance. Goal revisiting. Focused massage and stretching exercises.

Sessions may include:

  • Hot Stones.

Hot stones are used to warm up the tissue in a most relaxing way. They are then generally left in place as the rest of the body is massaged. This is an amazing treat for those tight muscles due to the cold winter months.

  • Therapeutic Cupping.

Heat created suction is employed to adhere cups to the body in an effort to pull out the stagnation of qi or blood in an area. Often used to relieve pain. This is a great tool in that it can pull the muscle belly up as opposed to pressing into it as with other massage techniques.
